Compostable and biodegradable: understanding conditions and standards

Compostable, biodegradable, bio-based and plastic-free describe different properties. Check composition, disposal conditions, product specifications and supporting documents.

Start material selection with the intended use and local waste treatment options. Bio-based describes feedstock origin. Biodegradation describes conversion by microorganisms under particular conditions. Compostability also involves degradation, disintegration and other requirements under a defined test framework.
Check industrial and home composting separately
An industrial composting certificate does not establish performance in home compost, soil or the sea. Temperature, moisture, microbial activity and product thickness affect the outcome. A single decomposition period cannot describe every material or environment.
What should buyers request?
- Material grade, composition and finished-product thickness.
- The tested environment, method, duration and results.
- Certificate holder, covered products, validity and permitted use of marks.
- Local collection rules and facilities that accept the product.
Plastic-free claims also need a defined composition and supporting basis. Bio-based content or compostability certification alone does not establish composition or residue performance. Green Free Plast can provide information for a specific grade and application to support material assessment.
